Practically Perfect Photo Shoot!

I had the most awesome photo shoot last night with the sweetest little family!

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE working with little kids! They are so innocent and they wear their hearts on their sleeves, which makes it easy to capture all kinds of emotions. I used to think toddlers were the toughest age to photograph because they were so fast and couldn’t follow directions very well, but now they are my favorites! I’ve learned to follow their lead and I love to see what kind of funny things they will do next.

I know photo shoots can be stressful for parents because they want their children to behave perfectly, but in my experiences of photographing children over the past couple of years, I’ve discovered that it’s actually the parents behavior that makes all the difference, NOT the kids’. What I mean by that is this: If a parent comes to the session feeling tense, the kids pick up on that instantly and react to it. But if a parent comes to a session completely relaxed, the kids respond accordingly. Kids know when they are being expected to perform and they don’t like it. I always get much better images when the kids are allowed to just be themselves because their smiles are more genuine. I also firmly believe that the more fun you have during a session, the more you will appreciate the photos because they will spark happy memories that you had that day, which is really the whole point of photographs in the first place isn’t it?

Anyway, when I talked to this mom on the phone the other day to make final arrangements for the session, and she mentioned that they would be wearing turquoise and brown, I knew right away that we were going to get along great! And when I met them in person, I liked them even more! I have never seen a dad get into a photo shoot as much as this one did. He was coming up with all kinds of fun shots and he acted like a goofball at all the right times to help me get his little girl to smile for the camera. Both of the parents were relaxed, yet energetic, and ready for anything! There were times when they seemed to forget I was even there, which was awesome!  It was as though they were out enjoying a nice evening together and I just happened to be there to capture the fun.  They skipped rocks by the river bed, tossed fallen leaves into the air, read books, chased bubbles, and gave each other butterfly kisses. It was about as perfect of a session as you could ask for.

Okay, enough rambling…let’s get to the photos! I seriously took more pictures at this session than any other toddler session I’ve ever done, so I’m having a hard time choosing which ones to post! Here are some of my absolute favorites:

I’ve never seen anyone get so excited about bubbles before. She was just too cute about it…

If you look close, you can see the bubble she’s watching.

Tiny cheerleader!

Thanks for the fun session “K” and “S”! Can’t wait to do it again sometime!

24 weeks and growing…

I barely have any pictures of myself from the first half of this pregnancy because I wasn’t really showing yet and most days I am in the middle of a bazillion projects and I’m without make-up and the last thing I want to do is pose for a camera.  But this pregnancy seems to be flying by, so I’ve set a goal to have Brian take a couple of shots of me each week until I deliver. So, get ready to watch me GROW!  Here are a couple he took of me in the studio this morning.

And here is one from last week (23 weeks). I’m just now getting around to posting it.

These are my favorite pair of jeans, well capris actually. I can’t believe I still fit them. They’re unbuttoned for the photo, but I can actually still button them with no problem! They are low rise, so they fit perfectly under my belly and they have a little bit of stretch to them. I got them at TJ Max for like $12…ummm, two…wait, three years ago? I wear them pretty much every other day. In fact, if you’ve ever had a photo session with me, I’m sure you’ve probably seen me in them! I’ve been told before that I don’t dress very “professionally” because I show up to shoots in jeans and flip flops, but I figure that’s the beauty of being my own boss! I also figure kids are more comfortable around me if I dress casual.

So, someone tell me, are capri pants totally out of style these days? I seriously don’t pay that much attention to fashion unless it’s for babies/toddlers! But even if they are out of style, I don’t really care because I don’t feel all that comfortable in shorts and I get too hot in pants, so capris it is! I’m not much of a skirt/dress wearer, except when I’m pregnant, and then I LOVE them! The one pictured above is a good example of the style I like…stretchy, fitted tops, with a medium-length, comfortable skirt.

Daddy’s Perspective

Brian was in the mood to take some photos of Abbey in the studio this morning. I love it when that happens because all I have to do is get her dressed and send them off to play.  It’s so fun to see all of the cute pictures he gets of her!

This one is kind of a fun perspective…

I love this one because it is SO her! She gives me this blank stare all the time. She’s always been such a serious little thing. Don’t get me wrong, she can be a total chatter box, or giggle box at times, but this image just captures her serious side very well.

Lily

Miss Lily did very well for her first photo shoot! She was alert and calm throughout the entire session. She just stared into my camera as though she were mesmerized by it.

I love when parents bring fun blankets to a session! This one was so soft and I loved the texture of it…

She was so strong for 3 months and held her head up for the longest time!

Hangin’ out with dad…

More Cards!

I think I might have a little obsession going on right now with greeting cards…I just can’t seem to get enough of them! I’ve added some more designs to my Christmas card selection and I really love them. In fact, I think I might even use one of them for my own card this year! Check ‘em out by clicking HERE!

The cool part about the cards is that they are interchangeable! For the most part anyway. What I mean by that is, you can pick and choose the designs you like! So, for example, let’s say you really like the front of one card and the back of another…all you have to do is request that during the design process! I can also change the colors on many of the cards to make them match your photos! So, if you like certain layout, but think the colors are a little too bright for your taste, just say so!

Also, I forgot to mention in my Halloween Greeting Card post yesterday that I am totally booked for October, so I won’t be scheduling any Halloween sessions, but if you already have a session scheduled with me and would like to order some Halloween cards, please feel free to bring along your kiddo’s costume and we’ll snap a few pics of him or her in it while you’re here!

Miss Ava

It’s been about 6 months since I’ve photographed this little cutie, so it was really fun to see how much she has changed!  She’s still a tiny little thing, but her hair is longer and she was running all over the place!  She had a lot of fun exploring my studio and I managed to get her in front of the lights just long enough to get some really cute shots.

Here’s my favorite…

This one makes me smile…

and I’m pretty sure this one is going to make her mom smile…

I really love her eyes in this one…

and in the last one, she was laughing at Abbey, who was dancing around and being goofy in the studio.  Abbey never wants to be in front of the camera unless it’s someone else’s turn for pictures.  Then I can’t get her to move out of the way!

Wanna see what I was up to this weekend?

I made my Halloween greeting card templates!  I can’t tell you how much fun I had putting these fun little cards together!  I planned to do something like this last year, but I waited too long and then it got too late.  I’ve had some requests for Halloween photo shoots this fall, so I thought I’d better get going on some cards!  You can check them all out HERE!

A Budding Photographer

She really does seem a lot more comfortable behind the camera, rather than in front of it.  I was taking pictures of her in her “big girl bed” this morning and she cooperated for a while, then said “No more pictures of Abbey” and covered her face as usual.  So, I asked her “Do you want to take a picture of Mommy?”  She squealed and grinned and grabbed the camera from me.  She was being too cute about it, so of course I ran for the other camera to take pictures of her, taking pictures of me.  We had a great time together!

I showed her where the shutter button was and she proceeded to take somewhere around fifty pictures of me not looking my best.  Nearly all of her images got deleted, not because of bad photography skills, but due to an unprepared subject, looking ever so lovely in my baggy shorts and no make-up.  Actually, most of her images were perfectly exposed and surprisingly well focused.  However, she does need to work on her composition, but really, who am I to judge?  I mean, maybe she was going for a creative perspective on purpose.

She was having entirely too much fun.

It made Brian a little nervous to see pictures of his 5D (his second baby) in the hands of his two-year-old, but I assured him I was watching her closely and didn’t let her leave the bed with it. Which reminds me, he has been keeping close tabs on Canon lately and informed me this morning that they’ve finally come out with the latest upgrade to the 5D! I think I know what we’ll be getting each other for Christmas this year!  :)

Big Girl

With baby #2 on the way, I suddenly feel the need to help Abbey grow up a little bit faster, so I won’t have two “babies” on my hands.  We’ve been working really hard on the whole potty training thing this week.  She’s been showing interest for a long time, but I’ve been kind of lazy about it because I don’t want to deal with the accidents.  I’ve been wanting to turn her crib into a toddler bed for a while now, but I was waiting to find out the sex of this baby, to see whether or not I wanted to reuse her crib or get a new one.  Well, today was the big day!  I child proofed her room as best I could and took the side off of the crib.  I had the camera ready for the big moment because I knew she’d be excited to climb up into it all by herself, and I was right.  She didn’t even wait for me to put the side rail on before she was all snuggled up with her blanket and B-bear and was making pretend snoring noises.  Most of the pics I took are blurry because I was laughing too hard to hold the camera steady!

This is what the bed looks like with the side rail on it.  I love to watch her climb up into it all by herself.  It’s perfect timing because my belly is starting to get too big for me to be able to bend over and put her in it at night.  Tonight, I rocked her for a while, then asked her if she was ready to get in her bed.  She said “yes” so I set her down and she climbed up into the bed, snuggled in and went right to sleep!  It was so cute!  I’m curious to see how messy the room will be in the morning after she discovers she can get out by herself and finds all of her clothes and books!  This may be the cleanest her room will be for a long time…

I’m  also loving this next pic!  I’ve been trying to think outside of the box lately with my photography and I seem to keep finding myself photographing her feet!

Sorry for the Abbey overload again. Can you tell I’m missing my personal blog? I’d go back to it, if I felt like I had enough time to keep up with it! I’m sure the grandmas are excited to see all of the Abbey pics though!

More of Miss Abigail!

I hope ya’ll aren’t getting sick of seeing pics of Abbey because I’ve been in the mood to photograph her a lot lately!

I made this dress for her sometime last spring and I’ve been trying to get pics of her in it all summer! I’ve been waiting for just the right location, lighting, mood, etc. and the opportunity never seemed to present itself, so I finally just decided to pack her up in the car this evening and drive around.  I keep seeing tons of yellow wild flowers around town, but they all seem to be along busy roads or behind barbed wire fences. I went to some of my usual favorite spots, but I just wasn’t feeling it, so I finally just drove to the good ole “Farm House” that I love.  She fell asleep in the car on the way there, but perked right up when we got there and was ready to run and play.

I really, really love this old screen door!  I wish I could take it home with me!

I had a really hard time keeping her in the chair because she kept wanting to pick it up and carry it around, but I managed to keep her in it long enough to snap a few pics by bribing her with gummy bears.

She posed like this all by herself!
